Located on The South Shore a forty minute drive from Boston, Buttonwood Books & Toys is a good lesson on diversifying revenue streams.  Nearly half of the retail space is filled with specialty toys.  Everything from LEGO to KLUTZ.

“Service is the name of the game,” says owner Betsey Detwiler.  This is a lesson it seems she’s learned after twenty years in the business.  With two big chains within driving distance, Betsey knows how to keep her customer’s coming.  She works with forty book groups, and coordinates ten bookfairs at surrounding schools throughout the year.buttonwood  They also bring a lot of speakers in for the libraries.

When I mention it’s the first toy store I’ve seen, Betsey nods and admits that the toys are big business.  With the free wrapping and many children’s birthday parties in the community, Buttonwood is pn the saturday morning birthday party circuit.  People coming in to get a wrapped gift before going on with their day.

Betsey designed her store herself, with her customers’ needs and comfort in mind.  She looks at her sales figures every night to see what’s selling and what needs tweaking.
