Twenty minute soutside of Bend, OR is Sunriver Books & Music.  It’s a solid general trade bookstore–not too large–with an especially strong selection of fiction and travel books.

Deon Stonehouse is the owner.  She opened in 2005 and it’s been “trial by fire” ever since,  but she seems to have caught the swing of things.  This was one of the stops on my official tour.  Not knowing what to expect in what seemed either a small town or a large subdivision, I was surprised by the number of people who actually came out to hear me read.  Sunriver had a great audience.  People were engaged.  It was a lot of fun.  This store might be a ways off from the main road, but for authors, I’d say it’s worth the drive.sunriver books

It’s also a fabulous set up the Stonehouse’s have here.   Sunriver Books is the only bookstore in the planned community.  They are surrounded by national forests and resorts.  People living here seem to have time on their hands and enjoy reading.  There are five book clubs.

Sunriver carries CD’s and they also carry fine pens like Montegrappas from Italy.  They’re displayed behind the counter.  These pens are perfectly balanced and glide across paper.  A heck of a sideline.

Sunriver also works to build libraries at area schools.

A really neat store in Central Oregon and worth visiting if you’re vacationing near Bend.
